There's an irony at the center of DAM software that most marketing teams have felt but rarely named.
Platforms built to centralize brand content — to pull assets out of scattered drives, inboxes, and Slack threads and put them in one organized place — ended up creating a new kind of bottleneck. They centralized the files. They also centralized the friction.
Getting assets out of these systems often requires the same workarounds the platform was supposed to replace. A request. A wait. A download. A re-upload somewhere else. The vault is organized. The distribution is still broken.
The next chapter for DAM isn't better vaults. It's decentralized access.
I wrote a piece for MarTech Cube on why the distribution gap is where brands lose leverage, the shift from vault to engine to infrastructure, and why AI is becoming a new class of external user your DAM has to be built to serve.
